What am I Reading?

K-12 Online Conference: Jeff Utecht “Getting to know Flickr”

It looks like Jeff’s presentation was created in Camtasia Studio, which is a program I have been wanting to check out for a while. Unfortunately the list of programs to check out is getting longer by the minute. Where am I going to get the time from…?

Back to Jeff’s presentation…

Flickr.com (the site that he is presenting about) is backed by Yahoo and you will need a Yahoo ID in order to sign in. Without signing in you are still able to browse photos, search for photos, but are not able to save them as favorites, upload them or comment on someone else’s image.

Here are some of the features Jeff touches on:

  • You can also have pictures printed off by a commercial service directly through your Flickr account.
  • Public or Private settings for sharing photos with others
  • Blog integration of your pictures
  • Upload of your own pictures either through Flickr’s webbased upload form or through a special downloaded tool. Jeff recommends ” Flickr Uploadr” to upload photos directly from your desktop. It really seems to be a cool tool to just drag and drop your photos into a little window which will automatically upload to your Flickr account. You can also tag your pictures before you upload them.
  • You can organize your photos in groups and with tags and do basic editing such as rotating.
  • Ability to Geotag
WOW! The potential to take your kids around the world in pictures is great. My only worries are how will you know what pictures you will encounter when clicking on a specific spot in the world. Will they be appropriate for my students? Is there a safety features? I have to check into seeing if I can just have my uploaded photos displayed for my students? Is it possible to embed the map into a blog?
