FFLA Conference : Sarasota 2006

I have attended the FFLA (Florida Foreign Language Teacher Association) this weekend. Foreign Language teachers of Florida gathered in Sarasota. I always enjoy walking around the hallways o the conference center/hotel and the exhibit halls and hear a babel of languages. Hearing all these languages in one space is something I miss on a daily basis. Something I was used to when walking down the streets in Buenos Aires.

This year’s conference theme was “Discovering new Horizons: Let Language be your Compass”. Keynote Speaker was Eileen Mattingley. In her address she mentioned several quotes related to languages.

  • Texas governor, Miriam ‘Ma’ Ferguson, barred the teaching of foreign languages about 80 years ago, saying, ‘If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for us.’” (Ma Ferguson. Governor of Texas, circa 1920)
  • Poetry is that what gets lost through translation. (Robert Frost)
  • If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart. (Nelson Mandela)

Action Research: Quality Writing on Blogs


In the month of March 2012, an International team of 4 elementary school classrooms are conducting Action Research about quality writing through blogging. You can support them by giving them an authentic global audience and modeling quality commenting on their posts.
