FETC 2007- iPods for everyone
The last session of the day and the juice in my laptop’s battery was gone !!! I did enjoy “iPods for Everyone“, presented by Adriane Peters and Teresa Gunter-Jackson from Leon County, FL.
I was in luck, since Terry Pickering agreed to take notes for me.
Leon County schools are using iPods as audio books for elementary students to help them learn to read. In middle school, iPods are used to improve reading comprehension. Students listen to the story on the iPod then they compare and contrast characters. They are also using the iPods to post weekly podcasts from the principal to update parents on the events of the week. They also created a podcast message to send to the troops overseas.
iPod Objectives
- To keep school administrators current on emerging technology
- To incorporate “just in time” technology in the curriculum
- To increase student reading fluency and comprehension.
Technology Awareness Sessions
- District Administrators were given iPods with iTunes card to get them excited and interested in the technology.
- Master Technology Teacher cadre was an ambassador at the school to identify ways the iPods could be used in the classroom.
- School Faculty Meetings were used to introduce technology to the teachers and find out how they would like to use it in the classroom.
Team planning for implementation
- Identify curriculum content – 6th grade read aloud lessons for Level 1 and 2 Readers
- Locate media- “United streaming”. “Jason and the Golden Fleece” & “Pandora’s box” videos were put on the iPod for students to watch and then they answered discussion questions.
- Supplemental materials such as handouts, graphic organizers, and questions
- Rehearsal- Review the lesson and test the technology before you present! Work out how to implement the lesson with iPod.
Programs used in implementation
- Compass odyssey
- United Streaming
