Langwitches Podcast 016 – Global Interconnectiveness Lesson
4th grade students together with their teachers started a China immersion week . I was fortunate to be present during the kick off when Deborah Dodd introduced the concept of Global interconnectiveness and what it means to be a part of a whole to her students.
You will hear how she prepared the students for the upcoming inter-curricular studies, where students studied math, reading, writing, geography, history, and social studies within the context of exploring all the provinces of China.
As the culminating project, students were given a cut-out construction paper in a shape of one of the Chinese provinces. On that puzzle piece they wrote things that they had learned during their research and glued representations, like soy beans, wheat, cotton balls, Panda figurines, etc. if they were present in their province.
At the end of the week, students assembled a wall mural of all their different pieces together as one whole country of China. They then were treated to a day immersing themselves into Chinese culture, by visiting a tea house, a market place, where they could bargain for candy, toys etc. from China. They also visited a museum with Chinese artifacts that were brought in by parents and spent time in a room playing traditional Chinese games, such as jump rope and Hacky Sack.
