I received the following e-mail today:

Dear Langwitches editor,
I am an author whose books are used in many school programs to encourage children to express themselves through writing. I have just launched a free new web site — http://www.makebeliefscomix.com — where students can create their own comic strips. The site offers fun animal and human characters with different moods, thought and talk balloons to fill in with words, and story prompts. It’s a wonderful resource to spur children and adults to write, read and communicate their ideas and to practice English and other languages. It is also being used as a tool by educational therapists who work with deaf and autistic people to help them understand concepts and communicate. I would be very appreciative if you would share with your members and colleagues, or tell me whom I should contact to share this information. I need your help because it takes a community to build a community resource like this.
With thanks,
Bill Zimmerman

I tried it out. The interface is very intuitive and I really liked the different moods you can give your characters. The background option is a little limited by only offering a few solid colors. I was also missing the ability to add a few prompts. Once I finished the cartoon, I had the option to print or to e-mail the cartoon. I was advised to e-mail a copy to myself, since the cartoon would not be saved or stored. One hour later I am still waiting for that e-mail to arrive. So my guess is, that I lost “my creation”. This is not something that I want to happen to my students. Hopefully it was just a kink and they will iron it out.

Update 1: After trying it a second time and again no e-mail with the cartoon arrived in my mailbox, I took a screenshot (Command, Shift & 4 on the MAC) of the cartoon I created and then uploaded via FireFTP (Firefox Add-on) to my blog server.

Update 2:

I finally received an e-mail of my second attempt. Directing me to the following link. There you have the option of printing it out. Unfortunately no code to be able to embed the comic in a blog or website.
