Final thoughts from the Tech Forum

While the thoughts were still fresh in our minds and because we were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for 1 1/2 hours in Orlando, Paige and I tried to come up with some key points and sites or tools mentioned that we took away from the Teaching and Learning TechForum.

  • Students have all these different tentacles attached to them that help them send and receive information and being connected all the time (Warlick)
  • Students are plugged in, when they get to school they are being powered down.
  • United Streaming: “Worth every penny”
  • BrainPop and Junior BrainPop
  • Simulation Games
  • Incentives for teachers’ Professional Development
    • Flashdrives
    • iPods
  • Keys to Professional Development (Jakes)
    • Learning teams and clubs. Teams are mandatory, meetings are being held during school hours and its goals are for organizational growth. Clubs are voluntary, meetings are held after hours and its goals for individual growth
  • Create a del.icio.us account for your school. Everybody contributes.
  • Mostly everyone (public or private, small or large districts) are in the same boat regarding professional development and technophobias
  • Teachers need to experience the process of the learner through web 2.0 tools before the will incorporate them into their teaching.
  • There needs to be the desire to incorporate the tools into a routine.
  • Professional Development without the Bells and Whistles might be the way to go in order not to intimidate beginners. Once they show interest, show them what more it can do.
  • Check into gaming and its values
  • Let students use any music they wish, when creating a video project. They need to feel they music in order to express themselves. Once they want to publish the movie, then they should find creative commons music and replace the copyrighted one. Great opportunity to talk about copyright issues!
