Tip for using Audacity in the Foreign Language or ESL Classroom

I am planning on introducing a song by Ricardo Arjona tonight to my adult Spanish class. I imported the song into iTunes and then converted it  with the AIFF converted.

To do this (in iTunes) go to

  1. Edit > Preferences
  2. Advanced tab > Importing tab
  3. Use drop down menu for “Import Using” and choose AIFF encoder

You are now ready to Open up Audacity to import the song file (look for it under your iTunes directory). Once it is opened up, duplicate the channel by using Ctrl-D and mute the original channel. I highlighted the copy and went into Effects to change (lower) the tempo of the song by about -33. Now I have Ricardo Arjona singing in the perfect speed for my Spanish students to follow along. Once we go through the song in “slow motion” and they are comfortable in listening and recognizing, you can switch back to the original speed.
