It allows the users to create privileged groups and choose precisely which posts they want to be seen by the public and which ones they want to share only to people they want. By allowing blogs to have a private and public face, children can get all the benefits of blogging. It becomes a place where they interact with a specified group of people and at the same time interact with the rest of the online world. I also believe that this teaches prudence and good judgement.
