I really enjoyed reading your thoughts. I hate field trips that occur in isolation from what's happening in the class.I think that field trips should be an extension of the classroom learning. I also agree about using the pictures and reflections of the students after the trip. I've used VoiceThread for students reflections for trips but I would like to incorporate some of the ideas presented during the trips.

Thanks for listening and doing such a thoughtful reflection. I think your ideas are great! I need to go back and link your post into my show notes. Sometimes just bringing a topic like this up can set some improvements in motion, but ultimately it takes planning and careful scaffolding.

I've been working with our teachers to use enhanced podcasting as a part of our field trips. Our art teacher has used this with field trips to the Detroit Institute of Arts. She has had her students go to the DIA to research and prepare enhanced podcasts for other classes to use before or during their trip. She also had 4th grade students compare and contrast 2 pieces of art using digital voice recorders while at the DIA. The recordings were edited into a podcast with images of each piece of art. Examples of her podcasts are here:

Our sixth graders also turned their trip to Chicago into a podcast. They wrote the script as if it were happening live and combined it with sound effects and pictures:

There are so many ways one can use technology as a part of a field trip. Thanks for your great ideas!

I agree. I have had a school close by where all Year 7/8 (10-12 yrs old) students attended camp for a week.Took hundreds of photos that are now sitting on the server. Once they were back, they had to rush onto the next busy topic and camp is a distant memory. The photos could have been used to demonstrate their focus of relating to others, looks like, sounds like, feels like. I think these teachers are afraid of the technology and we have to do lots of handholding before they can become independent. We also need to look carefully at the needs of 21st C learners with teachers to be able to facilitate effective change.
