Day 20: Three Links Out
Here’s another activity from Christy Tucker .This task is based an idea by Dave Ferguson that he calls "Three Links Out " or "Three Clicks Out ." It’s a way to find and explore blogs that aren’t as familiar to you.
- Go to one of the blogs you regularly read and follow a link to another blog. This link could be in the blogroll or in a post.
- From that blog, follow a second link to a new blog.
- From that location, follow a third link to somewhere new.
Once you follow your third link, find a post and comment on it. If you aren’t happy with where you ended up, repeat the process until you find something that inspires a comment.
I started out on one of my favorite Elementary School Tech Blogs NCS-Tech by Kevin Jarrett. Checked out his blogroll and clicked my way through to Lucy Gray ’s blog and then to Passionately Curious .Very interesting site from a second grade teacher’s perspective, but a dead end for me, since there was no blogroll, nor links within the posts that I scanned. So, back to Lucy’s site. From there I linked to Epoch Learning , which just loaded an empty white page. Back again to Lucy… By now, I have spent over 30 minutes surfing around. I think I will stay at Lucy’s site and comment there.
I can see the value of this challenge. Extend your reach from your typical blogroll and venture further than you have before, BUT when I start surfing links, I tend to get lost. Too much to read, too much to absorb, too much to choose from. I guess that is the allure of it.

It’s fun to see how “three clicks out” has taken on a life of its own. For myself, it’s just an informal guideline, like “when in doubt, order the local microbrew” or “the bigger the promo, the worse the movie.”
I get lost as I hop around, too, but getting lost online isn’t much of a crisis. I can either backtrack, or just click “home” (should that button have an image of ruby slippers?).
I hope you find that trying the three clicks is sometimes serendipitous.
