For myself, it's just an informal guideline, like "when in doubt, order the local microbrew" or "the bigger the promo, the worse the movie." I get lost as I hop around, too, but getting lost online isn't much of a crisis. I can either backtrack, or just click "home" (should that button have an image of ruby slippers?). I hope you find that trying the three clicks is sometimes serendipitous. It’s fun to see how “three clicks out” has taken on a life of its own.
