We had a SmartBoad Training session at school. Our SmartBoard area representative came to demonstrate the mechanics of the board, while my colleagues Paige M., Katie B.tried to tie in education, pedagogy, 21st century skills, hands-on time,  lesson planning and collaboration for and with this new tool.

We will be starting out the new school year with 4 SmartBoards available in our building. One is wall mounted in TechConnect, where every teacher will have at least once a week access to it during their pre-reserved time with us. Other wall mounted boards went up in a 3rd grade Math teacher and 5th & 6th grade reading teacher’s classroom. A portable SmartBoard will be wheeled across the hallway every day and shared between a Kindergarten class in the morning and a 2nd grade classroom every afternoon (Kindergarten is dismissed at 1 pm every day).

SmartBoards are MORE than expensive chalk boards! How can we use this amazing tool to enhance our teaching strategy, engage and prepare our students for 21st century skills?

Techniques: (Thanks to my Twitter and Plurk Network for contributing their favorite technique)

  • Erase and reveal
This technique allows students to use the eraser to magically reveal hidden text and images within SMART Notebook lessons.
  • Magic Box
Students move text over a colored background and it reveals the correct answer.
  • Cover
Cover correct answers with like colored rectangles , then to reveal pull them aside.
  • Magic Tunnel
Create columns with contrasting colors, then create a text box and change colors of words to the opposite color of the column you want it displayed in.
download Magic Tunnel template from Smart Board Resource Wiki

Tips:

  • Export notebook files as powerpoint presentation, then upload to Slideshare.net in order to embed them in your classroom blog.
  • With the eraser you can circle what needs to be erased, then tap the middle of the circle to make anything inside the circle disappear
  • Downloaded Discovery Streaming videos, viewed them with the smart player

Great resources. There were things here I hadn’t seen before and will share with my teachers. Thanks.

Thanks for posting shortcut keys. I am big fan on the Smartboard for my classroom. I have been struggling for years in how to make presentations more interactive and student-centered. With Smartboard the students have a chance to be front and center with the teacher to share the learning process rather than a spectator of a Powerpoint presentation that lacks students participation. For years our district spent lots of professional development money on Powerpoint for teachers. It was endless until the Smartboard came along. Thankfully, Smartboard is the new Powerpoint!
