How Can I Become Part of this ReadWriteWeb Revolution?
Alice Barr, Bob Sprankle, Cheryl Oakes
Questions to ponder?
- What is school?
- Make our classrooms as exciting as homecoming?
- How does teacher engage students as learners?
We have digital students, a whole new kind of literacies to teach (compared to the 3 Rs):
- media literacy
- collaboration
- communication
- innovation
- information literacy
- digital citizenship
- ethics
We need to teach students how to invent, innovagte and think for themselves, be self-directed. These skill sets are different from what we were taught and how we were taught to teach.
How to you learn to teach those skills when you are stuck in a classroom, paperwork, standards, grading, NCLB, etc.? The vision of the three presenters is that you don’t have to do this on your own. Find a commmunity/network that you can share with others.
Technology tools used in the presentation:
- Flip Video http://www.theflip.com/products_flip_ultra.shtml
- Skype: http://skype.com
- Skype Chat: http://www.tinyurl.com/562nm4
- SEEDlings Ning: http://bitbybitseedlings.ning.com
- Voicethread: http://voicethread.com
How can web 2.0 tools help you and your students to be collaborators or co-creators of learning?
Cheryl suggest Voicethread as a great tool for beginners, easy access to publish. Bob says that bringing in these technologies has a transformative effect.
- sharing the ownership of the learning
- giving kids the tools and they will come up with uses we never thought of
- using these tools allows students to make, create and archive their learning to make it more meaningful
- tools help with differentiation for different learning styles
- how to engage students in a participatory culture?
- Is your class a journey, an adventure
Starting to create your own community of learners. The concersation is ongoing and asynchronous.
