It’s a Book! Really?
I received this link to the following book trailer from the librarian at the school I work at.It was very timely, since we just had a discussion about “real books”, e-books and the advantages/disadvantages of each.
I am very interested in the topic, have written about it before here and here and am monitoring my own reading habits along the journey.
The following video clip illustrates and highlights nicely
- the gap of digital and “real book” readers
- some of the differences
- new vocabulary associated with digital readers
- on one level reading is reading. Reading a book can take you away for hours as can reading and “surfing” a digital book.
As you are watching the short video clip, what are your reactions? Where do you stand in the journey from paper books to digital books? Are you holding on to the “real thing” with your tactile and olfactory senses? Are you a hybrid and enjoy reading both? Have you completely abandoned the physical book and are reading purely online, on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle or Nook?

I really got a kick out of the video!
As for me, I prefer books if I’m reading literature. If it’s informational text, I’m going to be skimming it anyway, so an ebook or some such digital thing is all the same to me.
Hi Silvia,
I tend to agree with Tatiana, though I wonder how much of my preferences are due to the years of pleasure I’ve already had reading print books. I certainly get all of my news online these days, though.
As a publisher, I really wonder about the future of e-textbooks. On the one hand, I can easily see someone doing their Biology reading before coming to a lecture on an e-reader (especially if it allows for fancier annotation than pencil). On the other, students have to write in their ESOL textbooks, so an e-book version of those would need to allow for students to type in their work.
I’d love to hear what others think.

I loved this little video clip and I have embedded it in my blog. I have also directed my readers towards your blog and your thoughts. I trust this is ok. As for myself, I am an avid fiction reader and I have spent many, many hours curled up with a book and a lovely hot coffee or nice glass of wine. As I wrote on my blog, I have listened to audio fiction and unless I am travelling, I tend to wander away in terms of concentration. My goal this week, is to get my hands on a digital book so that I can make the comparison for myself. AS for the video, it made me smile. I can hear so many of my students, asking those same questions about technology. I watched Sir Ken Robinson on TED talks speaking about his daughter saying that the reason she didn’t bother with a watch, was because it was a “single use device”. Thanks for your fabulous blog.
