Creating Ringtones for the iPhone

I have been having fun creating ringtones for my iPhone. At first I was having some problems syncing them correctly with the phone. You can read about the solution to that issue here .

This blog is a step-by-step guide to how to create and sync to your iPhone.

1. Go to Audiko.net and search for a song title or artists and see if a ringtone with the music segment you like is already available to download. If not you can upload an MP3 file from your computer or enter a URL where an MP3 file is located.
2. You can use iTunes to convert a file into an MP3 file by
   1. Preferences > Advanced > Importing
   2. Make sure it is set to >Import using MP3 encoder
   3. Select your song > Advanced > Convert selection to MP3
   4. iTunes will convert your file to MP3. Most songs purchased through iTunes store are locked and will not allow a conversion.
3. Once you have the song converted go back to Audiko and upload your song
4. Once uploaded you can now choose which 20-30 seconds of the song you would like to have as your ringtone
5. Make sure that your ringtone is under 40 seconds long. Somehow the iPhone ignores any longer ringtone after it is synced. It simply does not show up in your ringtone list.
6. Create the ringtone and download to a your computer
7. Double click on the file and it will automatically be opened up in your iTunes Ringtone folder
8. Plug your iPhone to computer and go to the ringtone tab. You should see the newly downloaded ringtone > check the tone and apply to sync with your phone

iPhones and Ringtones

I spent the last 2 hours fiddeling with iTunes, my iPhone, Apple.com discussion groups and telephone tech support. What a hassle with a problem I was having regarding my new iPhone and syncing ringtones to it.

I hope that by documenting my troubles and the solution will spare someone else the waste of time trying to figure it out.

Problem:

I purchased two ringtones through iTunes, created a ringtone with Garageband and also used Audiko to create and download my own ringtone. Once the ringtones were in my iTunes library under the ringtone folder, I tried to sync them, but they did not show up on the Ringtone folder of the iPhone. I then simply dragged and dropped them into the iPhone. That seemed allow them to be shown under ringtones of the device of iTunes, BUT now when looking under sounds in Settings directly on my iPhone, it only copied one of the tones MULTIPLE times!

I found an Apple discussion forum, it seemed that others were having the same issue. So far no one was able to resolve it on the forum.

After being on the phone with Apple for over 1 hour with 4 different people from different departments (all very nice and friendly) and them calling me back 3 times after investigating further, we got it to work. Looks like that it is a bug and they will be working on it.

Solution:

1. The iPhone does not like it when you MANUALLY update your music. I had to uncheck “Manually manage music and video” under the Summary tab of the device.
2. Under the Ringtones Tab of the device add the ringtones by syncing them one by one (!) Check off one tone, then sync, then check the second one, then sync, etc.
3. Doing the above two things seemed to do the trick. I am able to have several rintones listed under Settings> Sounds > Custom and can assign the different tones to different contacts. I hope that Apple comes up with an update that makes that process a little easier and more intuitive. I want my manual update feature back!!!
